Where two old roads cross
Royston grew where Ermine Street, the Roman road north from London, crossed the prehistoric Icknield Way. A cross stood at the junction and gave the place its early name, Roisia's Cross. A boulder thought to be its base now sits at the north end of the High Street.
Beneath the crossroads is Royston Cave, a carved chalk chamber discovered in 1742 whose origins are still argued over.
Royal hunting and a moved border
James I liked Royston enough to build a hunting lodge here, completed in 1607, and returned almost every year. The town straddled the county line for centuries until the boundary moved in 1896 and put all of it in Hertfordshire.
Kitchens across the town
Royston mixes older houses in the centre with large areas of later housing. For many homes, the quickest upgrade is replacing laminate with stone on the existing units. Where a kitchen is being redesigned, an island top in quartz or quartzite is a popular centrepiece.

Questions from Royston
Royston is in Hertfordshire. Do you cover it?
Yes. Royston and the SG8 postcode are part of our area.
Can you replace just the worktops?
Yes. Provided the cabinets are solid, level and secured, stone can go straight on. It is a job we are asked for all the time.
Is planning permission needed for new worktops?
Not for an unlisted house. Listed homes are different: ask North Hertfordshire District Council before starting.
